Director:
John Krasinski
Production Company:
Sunday Night Productions
The Challenge:
On a hybrid VFX feature like *IF*, the timeline leaves no room for rough guesses. The production required breaking down massive, effects-heavy sequences involving live-action talent (Ryan Reynolds) interacting with invisible characters, a giant purple creature, and a flame-spewing dragon. The challenge wasn’t just visualizing the story; it was doing so at high speed while maintaining absolute spatial clarity for the downstream VFX teams.
The Solution:
Working directly with Director John Krasinski via Zoom calls, Joe delivered more than just scene illustrations; he built the technical roadmap for a world where imaginary characters had to feel physically real. His ability to move quickly without sacrificing structure allowed the production to lock camera framing, eyelines, staging, and VFX logic before a single pixel was rendered.
The Result
Studios demand boards at lightning speed, but speed without technical reliability damages credibility and causes expensive downstream fixes. By delivering storyboards that sold the idea, communicated the story clearly, and functioned immediately on set, SJS accelerated the production timeline and eliminated costly guesswork from the VFX pipeline.
